Princess Alice, Duchess of Gloucester
(1901-2004), Wife of Prince Henry, Duke of Gloucester; daughter of 7th Duke of Buccleuch and 9th Duke of QueensberrySitter in 137 portraits
Lady Alice Montagu-Douglas-Scott married Prince Henry, the Duke of Gloucester, in 1935. The couple travelled extensively to perform their royal duties. During World War II, Princess Alice worked with the Red Cross and the Order of St. John. She became head of the Women's Royal Air Force in 1940, and her association with the Air Force continued for many years. She was also Colonel-in-Chief or deputy Colonel-in-Chief of many regiments in the British Army. She published The Memoirs of Princess Alice, Duchess of Gloucester in 1981. In 2001, the Royal Family held a ceremony to acknowledge her centennial birthday, her last public appearance.
