Edward Watson

(1976-), Dancer

Sitter in 2 portraits
Watson was a student with the Royal Ballet School, graduating into the Royal Ballet in 1994 and becoming principal dancer in 2005. At the National Dance Awards in 2008 he won Best Male Dancer, in 2012 he received an Olivier Award for Outstanding Achievement in Dance for The Metamorphosis and in 2015 he won Prix Benois de la Danse for his performance in The Winter's Tale. His extreme flexibility has made him a muse for Wayne McGregor, who has created roles for him. He was awarded a MBE in 2015 and is currently the only British-born male principal in the Royal Ballet. He has lately collaborated with Wendy Whelan, a former highly regarded principal with New York City Ballet.
