Paxman began his career in broadcasting in 1972 when he joined the BBC's graduate training programme, moving from local radio to reporting for Tonight and Panorama and as a newsreader for the Six O'Clock News. As a presenter of Newsnight (1989-2014) Paxman's forthright interviewing style became his trademark. He became chairman of University Challenge in 1994, and is the author of numerous books including The Victorians (2009), accompanied by a BBC TV series.
