Sir John Lysaght Pennefather

(1800-1872), General

Sitter in 1 portrait
Pennefather entered the army in 1818 and first saw action with Sir Charles Napier in India in 1843. In the Crimea, he commanded a brigade with credit at the Alma but distinguished himself still further at the battle of Inkerman on 5 November 1854 when his division of less than three thousand men resisted a massive force of Russian infantry. He was invalided from the Crimea in 1855.
