Sir Harry David Jones
(1791-1866), EngineerSitter in 1 portrait
A soldier in the Royal Engineers throughout his career, Jones had seen action in the Peninsula War and served in a wide variety of posts up to the beginning of the Crimean War. In December 1854 he was called to Constntinople to be commandant there but, on his arrival, was ordered to join the army at Sebastopol. In spite of being seriously wounded by grapeshot in June 1855, he insisted on being carried to the trenches on a stretcher to witness the final successful assault on the city on 8 September.
