Bunney was a clerk at John Ruskin's publishers, Smith, Elder & Co.. In 1855 he enrolled in evening art classes at the Working Men's College, where Ruskin's influence is found in the attention to detail in his drawings of natural objects and topographical views. He settled in Italy from 1863, firstly in Florence and then in Venice where he died at fifty-four. Throughout his artistic career Bunney benefited from Ruskin's patronage, also selling Venetian views to a range of American clients. His reputation has grown in recent years: a large number of works and sketchbooks were accepted in-lieu by H.M Government for Sheffield in 2002 and three works included in Tate's Pre-Raphaelite Vision exhibition in 2004.
