Businessman, patron of the arts and benefactor of numerous academic, medical and cultural institutions. Director (1952), Managing Director (1962) and Chairman (1981-96) of Universal Stores plc; Chairman of Burberrys Ltd (1978-96); Founder Trustee (1955) and Chairman (1972-2010) of the Wolfson Foundation, a major source of charitable funding and benefactor of the National Portrait Gallery. He was knighted in 1977 and created a Life Peer in 1985.
