Deborah Turbeville
(1932-2013), PhotographerArtist of 1 portrait
American photographer Deborah Turbeville began her career in fashion as an assistant to fashion designer Claire McCardell and in the editorial departments of Mademoiselle and Harper's Bazaar before taking up photography in the 1960s, working alongside Richard Avedon and Diane Arbus. She was a contemporary of Helmut Newton and Guy Bourdin, whose highly sexualised aesthetic Turbeville challenged through her mysterious and evocative compositions. Working for Vogue and Nova and photographing campaigns for clients including Valentino and Acne, Turbeville's fashion photographs were often interpreted as intriguing character studies and changed the course of fashion photography.
