Allen was born in Reigate, Surrey and was introduced to photography through a fortuitous game of golf between his school Maths master and local photographer Frank Woods. On the strength of this experience he moved to Carlton Studios in London where he worked for three years, taking still lives for trade magazines before joining the RAF. In the early 1950s Allen found premises for a studio in St. James's, London, and was encouraged to start taking photographs of conductors and music-related people. With this body of work he was approached by EMI and asked to work for them directly which he continued to do for the remainder of his long career.
