The London-born actor appeared on stage from the age of 13 and in films from 1930, specialising in tough roles as men of decision. From 1950 onwards was one of Britain's most popular stars appearing in films such as A Cruel Sea (1953), Bridge on the River Kwai (1957) and Lawrence of Arabia (1962). Silenced by throat cancer in 1966, he continued to appear in films being voiced by fellow actors.
