Katharine Hamnett
(1947-), Fashion designerSitter in 3 portraits
Fashion designer. A graduate of Central St Martin's College of Art and Design, Hamnett came to prominence in the early 1980s when her oversized t-shirts with large block slogans were adopted by pop bands including Wham! and Frankie Goes to Hollywood. In 1984 Hamnett won the first British Designer of the Year Award. Hamnett's clothes have consistently addressed political and social issues and since 1989 she has lobbied for a more ethical approach in the fashion industry and relaunched her label in 2005 under stricter moral guidelines.
