Annie Stewart
, Newspaper editorSitter in 1 portrait
Stewart began her career as a news reporter and worked her way up the journalistic ranks before she became an editor. For twelve years she was the editor of The Voice, Britain's foremost black-interest newspaper, where she was responsible for many breaking stories. Following the death of Wayne Douglas in police custody, which sparked the Brixton riots of 1995, she set out to establish the truth behind his death. The paper was accused on local radio by the Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police for being 'dangerously irresponsible' and 'inflammatory'. Stewart's controversial front pages often highlighted injustices, social marginalisation and other discriminatory issues faced by the British black community
