Dame Rosemary ('Rose') Jane Tremain (née Thomson)

Author. Born in London, Tremain studied at the Sorbonne in Paris and the University of East Anglia. An historical novelist, she approaches her subjects from 'unexpected angles, concentrating her attention on unglamorous outsiders.' Among many awards, she won the Angel Literary Award for Restoration (1989, which was made into a film in 1996), the Whitbread Prize in 1999 for Music and Silence and the Orange Prize in 2008 for The Road Home. She has also written numerous short stories and several radio plays.
