Artist of 1 portrait
After studying Engineering at Cambridge University (1942-5), Caro trained in sculpture at the Royal Academy Schools (1947-52) and as an assistant to Henry Moore (1951-3). As a teacher at St Martin's School of Art (1952-79) he made a significant contribution to sculpture, encouraging a new enquiring approach. Following his solo show at the Whitechapel Gallery in 1963, Caro's work, often using steel, became publically recognised. He was knighted in 1987. 'A gantry, machinery, industrial chains, oxy-acetylene cylinders, and men busy welding: it must be the studio of the artist who has remained a more innovative sculptor than any other for half a century.'
