Daphne Du Maurier

(1907-1989), Writer

Dame Daphne Du Maurier

Sitter in 24 portraits
Educated at home, Daphne Du Maurier came from a distinguished literary and artistic family. After publishing her first novel The Loving Spirit (1931), she married Sir Frederick 'Boy' Browning, and the couple had three children. The novels Jamaica Inn (1936) and Rebecca (1938), won her a large reading public. Her books fall into two genres; historical romance and contemporary suspense, and were often inspired by Cornwall, where she lived. Many of Du Maurier's novels became celebrated films, including The Birds (1963) and Don't Look Now (1973), which were adapted from her short stories.
