(Dowrish) Evelyn Louis Joll

(1925-2001), Art dealer

Sitter in 2 portraits
Chairman of Thomas Agnew & Sons from 1955 to 1992. In 1949 he married Pamela Kingzlett, the great-great-granddaughter of the art dealer, Thomas Agnew, and then joined the family firm, becoming director in 1955. An authority on J M W Turner, he produced the catalogue raisonné The Paintings of J M W Turner (1978, with Martin Butlin), which won the Mitchell Prize for Art History. Joll stimulated a huge growth of interest in the artist, culminating with the successful exhibition Turner: The Great Watercolours at the Royal Academy in 2001.
