Arthur Martin Leake
(1874-1953), Surgeon; recipient of the Victoria CrossSitter in 3 portraits
Only three people have been awarded the Victoria Cross twice. Two of them were non-combatants: Arthur Martin Leake and Noel Godfrey Chavasse. Army surgeon Martin Leake was the first to achieve this extraordinary distinction. He won his first Victoria Cross during the Boer War and the second in 1914 for rescuing a large number of the wounded who were lying close to the enemy's trenches, while exposed to constant fire.
