Princess Augusta was the third daughter of Friedrich III, Landgrave of Hesse-Cassel. Born at Rumpenheim Castle, Cassel in Germany., she married her second cousin, the Duke of Cambridge in 1818. From then until the ascension of Queen Victoria and the separation of the Hanoverian and British crowns, they lived in Hanover where the Duke served as Viceroy on behalf of his brothers, King George IV and King William IV. In 1837 they returned to Britain and lived at Cambridge Cottage, Kew and later St. James' Palace. Their three children included the 2nd Duke of Cambridge, Princess Augusta and Princess Mary Adelaide of Cambridge, later Duchess of Teck who became mother of George V's consort, Queen Mary.
