Charlotte Smith (née Turner)

Charlotte Smith was a poet and novelist who lived in rural Sussex. Her most famous work was the Elegiac Sonnets that, within the first twenty years of being published, went through nine editions and filled two volumes. Charlotte married Benjamin Smith, the son of a West India merchant and director of the East India Company. Benjamin's father Richard was an owner of plantations and enslaved Africans in Barbados. While Charlotte played a small role in the business and her family income relied on the slave trade, she wrote against slavery in works such as The Old Manor House and Beachy Head.
