Dame Clara Ellen Butt
(1872-1936), SingerSitter in 51 portraits
Educated at South Bristol high school and the Royal College of Music, Butt began her singing career in 1892. She was celebrated for her magnificent contralto voice and stately appearance and often performed works composed for her by Sir Edward Elgar. She was created DBE in 1920 for her services during the First World War.
