A distinguished horn player, Brain was a member of the RAF Orchestra during the Second World War, where he played incidental music by Britten for American radio broadcasts. Britten admired the young player and wrote several solos for him, including Serenade for tenor, horn and strings in 1943, which Brain recorded with Pears the following year; and the horn part in Canticle III Still Falls the Rain in 1954. Brain was tragically killed two years later in a car accident at the age of thirty-six.
