Bombay-born Karaka was the grandson of Dosabhai Framji Karaka|mp98188}, the author of History of the Parsis which became a definitive study on the Parsee community. Karaka read Law at Lincoln College at the University of Oxford. He became the first President of South Asian origin of the Oxford Union, succeeding his close friend Michael Foot. In 1938 he returned to Bombay, finding employment as a journalist for the Bombay Chronicle, later promoted to the board of Editors. As war correspondent he covered World War II, travelling to East India, Burma, the western front and Germany. Following these events he returned to Bombay, founding his own newspaper, The Current.
