Esmond Marcus David Romilly

(1918-1941), Writer

Writer; nephew of Winston Churchill. Along with his brother Giles, Romilly fought with the International Brigade in Spain and later in the Second World War. In 1934 he ran away from Wellington College, declared himself a Communist and began publishing the subversive periodical, Out of Bounds. At the age of 18 he went to Spain and fought at Boadilla, a subject on which he later based his account by the same name. In 1937 he married Jessica, the sister of Nancy Mitford.
