Frieda Emma Johanna Maria Lawrence (née von Richthofen)

(1879-1956), Writer; former wife of Ernest Weekley and later wife of D.H. Lawrence

Sitter in 11 portraits
Born in Metz, Germany, Frieda Lawrence came to England with her first husband Ernest Weekley, a university professor based in Nottingham, with whom she had three children. In Nottingham, she met the young writer D. H. Lawrence and in 1912, they eloped, marrying in 1914. Lawrence described Frieda as 'the one possible woman for me, for I must have opposition-something to fight'. The couple travelled extensively together. After the death of Lawrence in 1930, Frieda settled on their ranch in Taos, New Mexico. Her memoir of life with Lawrence, Not I, but the Wind was published in 1934, and her autobiography was published posthumously as Frieda Lawrence, the Memoirs and Correspondence.
