Gabrielle Elizabeth Clifford Cook was born at Bamford Grange, Cheadle, Stockport. She made her first stage appearances as a child. In her teens she understudied Gertie Millar in the The Toreador at the Gaiety Theatre. She became one of the most popular picture-postcard beauties of the day.
