George Rowe (1796-1864) was baptised on 8 July 1796 at St Sidwell's Parish Church, Exeter. His early life was spent in Exeter, working as an art teacher and lithographer there, and being noted for his topographical lithographs. He married Phillipa Curtis in 1828 and in 1932 moved to Cheltenham. He became joint owner of a printing and publishing business, while continuing his teaching and lithography.
In the early 1850s the business failed and he emigrated to Australia. He failed as a gold digger and also as a storekeeper in Bendigo, but finally succeeded with his water-colours of the area. Several of these paintings are in the Dixson Library, Sydney, the National Library of Australia and the Bendigo Art Gallery; they are of considerable historical interest, being among the earliest visual records of the locality
About 1858 he returned to England and settled in Exeter. In 1862 eight water-colours shown in the Victoria section of the London International Exhibition won him a medal
He died at Heavitree, Exeter, on 2 September 1864,
