Jean was the daughter of opera singer, Lady (Jane) Antoinette Sterling and John Mackinlay. Antoinette was the daughter of James Sterling known as the Iron King of New York, in America. Antoinette was born in New York, and her DOD was in 1904 in England. Jean was married to stage/screen actor, Harcourt Williams. Jean had brothers, both also on stage and singers, Kenneth Mackinlay and Malcolm Sterling Mackinlay, the latter having penned a tome about his mother's life here in America and in England.
