Lambert was an artist and member of a group of antiquarians, artists and natural philosophers known as the York Virtuosi, who gathered in York between 1670 and 1683. He had perhaps been inspired in his art by his father, who was a prominent Parliamentary general during the civil wars, but also a gardening enthusiast and painter of flowers.
