Margaret Lockwood

(1916-1990), Actress

Sitter in 14 portraits
While studying at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) Margaret Lockwood caught the attention of an agent who secured her a role in the film Lorna Doone (1934). Under contract to British Lion film company she made over a dozen films. In the 1930s she achieved critical success in Bank Holiday (1938) and in Alfred Hitchcock's The Lady Vanishes (1938). During the Second World War she appeared in a series of escapist films designed to boost morale. Although her career waned from the 1950s, she continued to appear on stage and screen. Lockwood's daughter, Julia, went on to become a successful actress.
