According to Shari Benstock in her biography of Edith Wharton- Elisabetta Mariano (Nicky) was hired in 1918 by Berenson’s wife Mary as the librarian at I Tatti. “Nicky became Berenson’s lover and devoted companion, and her mediating presence calmed family tensions.”
