Ruby Mildred Ayres (1883-1955), Romantic novelist
Sitter in 15 portraits
Undeterred by expulsion from school for writing 'an advanced love story', Ayres wrote 150 romantic novels. Her unprecedented success ensured large print runs and regular re-issues for novels including The Romance of a Rogue (1923) and Love without Wings (1953). An astute businesswomen, who negotiated her own contracts in Britain and abroad, Ayres's books are characterised by a simple morality where happiness depends on the 'simple things in life'.
