Orientalist, E. A. Wallis Budge studied Hebrew, Syriac, Akkadian and ancient Egyptian part-time while working at W.H. Smith & Sons (1870-8). After graduating from the University of Cambridge in 1883 he joined the British Museum and in 1894 he became Keeper of Egyptian and Assyrian Antiquities.
