Sir George Alexander MacFarren
(1813-1887), ComposerSitter in 11 portraits
The musician George Macfarren experienced difficulties with his eyesight from early childhood, influencing him in the choice of composing rather than performing music. A prolific composer who achieved celebrity for works such as the overture Chevy Chace (1836), Macfarren's career continued to flourish after the onset of blindness in the early 1860s, as aided by assistants, he carried on producing new works. In 1875, Macfarren became principal of the Royal Academy of Music and Professor of Music at the University of Cambridge. Knighted in 1883, he also participated in public debates leading to the Royal Commission, and supported the Royal Normal College.
