Within a few years of his death, on an expedition with Drake to the West Indies, John Hawkins was remembered as an exceptional naval administrator and commander in the Elizabethan navy. He had introduced many improvements in ship-construction. Today, he is also recognised as being closely involved in the beginnings of the English slave trade.
