Margaret Busby (Nana Akua Ackon)

Sitter in 3 portraits
Born in Ghana, Busby read English in London and in 1967 became Britain's first black woman publisher when she founded Allison & Busby with Clive Allison. The venture led to setting up offices in Soho and the publishing of many noted black writers including C.L.R James, Sam Greenlee and Rosa Guy. From 1987 to 1990, Busby was the editorial director of Earthscan Publications, and has since contributed to numerous publications and edited the anthology Daughters of Africa (1994). A campaigner for diversity in publishing since the 1980s when she co-founded GAP (Greater Access to Publishing), she is patron of Independent Black Publishers and a member of the Arts Council's Diversity in publishing steering group.
