Great-nephew of Lord Northcliffe, Viscount Rothermere succeeded his father as publisher of the Daily Mail and Associated Newspapers in 1971. He successfully re-launched the Mail as a tabloid, became Founder-Editor, in 1982, of the Mail on Sunday and out-manoeuvred rivals to gain control of London's evening newspaper market, eventually acquiring the Standard in 1986.
