Born in 1949, John Goto studied as a painter as well as a photographer. He held his first solo exhibition at the Photographers' Gallery, London in 1981 but subsequently worked and exhibited internationally. His work explored a number of Russian and Eastern European themes in addition to architectural subjects. He lived and worked in Oxford, but also lectured extensively at academic institutions in Britain, Finland, Russia and Israel.
