Known throughout his life as 'Jack', C. S. Lewis was the son of a Belfast solicitor. His undergraduate career at Oxford was interrupted by his call-up in the First World War, but he returned to complete his degree and in 1925 was elected to a Fellowship at Magdalen College. From 1954 to 1963 he held the chair of Medieval and Renaissance English at Cambridge. His best-known scholarly work is The Allegory of Love (1936), but from about 1930 Christianity coloured most of his writing and a readership outside the academic community became familiar with his science fiction (Our of the Silent Planet, 1938), his diabolical epistles, The Screwtape Letters (1942), and the 'Narnia' children's books.
