(Lloyd) Logan Pearsall Smith
(1865-1946), WriterSitter in 25 portraits
Son of well-known Quaker preachers and writers. Smith went to Harvard and Balliol College, Oxford, where he was influenced by the aesthetics of Walter Pater. The publication of his first book, The Youth of Parnassus (1895), brought him the friendship of the poet Robert Bridges, and later they inaugurated the Society for Pure English, which was launched in 1919. He had become a naturalized British subject in 1913. His work included studies on Shakespeare, Milton and the Life and Letters of Sir Henry Wotton (1907) in three volumes. His preferred literary form was the essay, and these were brought together in Trivia (1920), More Trivia (1922) and All Trivia (1933).
