Jowell was born in London and educated at the Aberdeen and Edinburgh Universities. First elected Labour MP for Dulwich in 1992 (since 1997 Dulwich and West Norwood). Jowell served as Minister for Women (1998-2001), Minister for Employment (1999-2001), Minister for Public Heath (1997-9), Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport (2001-7). She played a critical part in London's bid to host the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. In 2003, after a two-year campaign, she gained the required endorsement of the entire Cabinet to support the proposal. She went on to lobby nationally and internationally for a successful outcome. She was Minister for the Olympics (2005-2010). She was made a Dame in 2012.
