Dame Denise Lewis
(1972-), Heptathlete; Olympian and London 2012 AmbassadorSitter in 3 portraits
One of the UK's most successful track and field athletes. She specialises in the heptathlon, consisting of seven athletic events including hurdles and javelin. She won gold medals at the 1994 and 1998 Commonwealth Games, and the Sydney Olympics in 2000. Lewis retired from athletics in 2005 and has forged a career in television presenting, regularly acting as a pundit for the BBC on major athletics events. As a London 2012 Olympics Ambassador, Lewis represented sport in the London 2012 bid team and has been an Ambassador for International Inspiration, a legacy programme for young people, as well as for disability charity SCOPE. She has been honoured with an MBE (1999) and an OBE (2000). In 2015, she was appointed President of Commonwealth Games England, working to increase opportunities for young British athletes.
