Iftikhar Ali Khan Bahadur, Nawab of Pataudi

(1910-1952), Indian prince and cricketer

Born in the family residence of the Nawabs of Pataudi in Delhi, he was related to the great Urdu poet Mirza Ghalib and Pakistan's first prime minister, Liaqat Ali Khan. He was educated and coached in cricket at Lahore's Chief's College (later renamed Aitchison College) and at Balliol College, Oxford. He went on to become an accomplished professional cricketer, gaining a place on the Ashes tour in 1932. In 1946 he captained and played for India in England winning Indian Cricketer of the Year that year. He received his title of Nawab after his father's death. His state became part of the newly independent India in 1948. Following Indian independence, he worked for the Indian Foreign Office until the time of his death.
