Beverly Malone

(1948-), General Secretary, Royal College of Nursing

American-born Malone was the General Secretary (2001-2007) of the Royal College of Nursing, the UK's largest professional union of nurses. In 2006, Tony Blair appointed her as a member of the UK delegation to the World Health Assembly. She holds a PhD in Clinical Psychology and has had a special interest in minority health issues, racial and ethnic health disparities, and issues relating to race and cultural diversity. She was elected President of the American Nurses Association, representing 180,000 nurses throughout the United States, being the second African-American to hold this post. In 2007 she was appointed Chief Executive Officer of the National League for Nursing which has a membership of over 40,000.
