Assistant Keeper and then Keeper in the Department of Coins and Medals at the British Museum, from 1974 until 1992, where he organised Fake: the art of deception in 1990.

The mother of Sir Mark Ellis Powell-Jones was Ann Murray who married John Ernest Powell Jones in 1949. She married a second time in 1968 to a Danish diplomat called Janus August Worm Paludan. Janus was for a period of four years Danish ambassador to China where Ann became very interested in Chinese history. She wrote many books on Chinese architecture, sculpture and history.
Mark's younger brother to her first husband was Robert Powell-Jones who died in 1998 of a heart attack at the age of 44. He was an eminent barrister specialising in Chancery work.
Janus, Ann and Robert are all buried in Denton village in north Cumbria, England.
