Director of the Royal Collection from 1988 until 1996. Surveyor of the Queen's Works of Art from 1972 until 1996 and Surveyor Emeritus from 1996 onwards. Keeper of the Collection at Waddeson Manor from 1962 until 1963. A specialist in Sèvres porcelain and French furniture, he was Honorary President of the French Porcelain Society from 1985 and a Trustee of the Wallace Collection from 1998.
