Professor in the Department of Art History and Theory at the University of Essex since 1973. Educated at Jesus College, Cambridge and University College London. Head of Art History at Camberwell School of Art and Crafts(1961-7) and Lecturer in the Philosophy of Art at the Warburg Institute (1967-9). Trustee of the Victoria and Albert Museum (1987-96). Publications include Manifold in Perception: Theories of Art from Kant to Hildebrand, (1972), Critical Historians of Art (1982), and Depiction (1998).
