Eric Sykes (1923-2012), Actor, comedian, writer, director and producer

Sitter in 10 portraits
After performing as a comedian during World War Two, Sykes worked as a radio and television scriptwriter, contributing to the Goon Show and the Tony Hancock Show. In 1960 he starred in his own television series Sykes and A ... alongside Hatti Jacques. The pair reunited in 1972 in the series Sykes which ran for seven years. From his early thirties, Sykes had begun to lose his hearing, which led to his creation of the self-directed wordless comedies The Plank (1967) and Rhubarb (1970). In recent years he appeared in BBC TV's Gormenghast (2000) and the film The Others (2001). He was awarded a CBE in 2004.
