Actor. Born in Coventry, brought up in South Africa where he made his stage debut in 1950. Returned to Britain establishing a reputation on London stage. In the 1970's appeared in Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead (1971) and Privates on Parade (1972) with the RSC. Made Broadway debut in As You Like It (1974) and also performed there in Shadowlands (1990-92). Best known on television for Yes Minister (1980-82) and Yes, Prime Minister (1986-8). Won Best Actor Academy Award nomination for The Madness of King George (1994).
