During the First World War Kertész took photographs on the front and behind the lines as a soldier. His pictures were first published in a Hungarian magazine in 1917. He moved to Paris in 1925 and worked as a freelance photographer for various German, Italian and English magazines, selling his first photographs to a German museum in 1929. Kertész moved to New York in 1936 and worked for magazines such as Harper's Bazaar, Vogue and Look. He had an exclusive contract with Conde Nast publications from 1949 until 1962, after which he published a series of photography books that made him famous worldwide.
