I worked with Allan Ballard at John Cowan's studio 1963/64 (Shaftesbury Mews) nr. Earls Court. I was 16yrs.old and lived in the Wimbledon area so I used the District Line. We both had worked for the London Evening Standard. I remember Allan turning 21 in 1964. He was John's assistant and photographic printer, a task at which he excelled. He could read JC's requirements brilliantly using all his seemingly natural darkroom skills. In 1964 he assisted on the 'Vogue' North Pole assignment at Resolute Bay, Canada. Allan had a personal style and charisma which was evident even when emerging from his utilitarian Minivan that was used to carry JC's lighting. I left the studio pre-filming of Antonioni's "Blow-Up". Allan went on to flourish in his career . Allan Ballard was a talented Photographer, a hard working, nice person... R.I.P.

When Allan was photographing Debbie Harry.
A little while ago I posted that as of September 3rd 2019 it has been 40 years since arriving in America. (i.e. 1979) I mentioned that I spent one night getting pissed at the Plaza Hotel with a chap I had met at my uncle's pub who said he sometimes works in NYC. His name was Alan Ballard. He was a photographer. He told me his assignment at the time was photographing Debbie Harry (Blondie) but I hadn't heard much of their music as I had been in the middleeast, Pakistan and India the year before, so it didn't really register. His assistants had back stage passes to the Grateful Dead at Madison Square Garden, but even that didn't really register. We had an amazing piss up that night mainly on Whiskey Sours. I heard a while ago that he had died. On a whim tonight i decided to try a google search. I must be getting old as it never occurred to me that I could do that! Life is funny sometimes! RIP Allan. Jonnies pub is open all hours.
